A Beginner’s Guide to Pricing Ecommerce Products for Maximum Profit
Most ecommerce stores don’t struggle because they lack traffic. They struggle because their pricing silently kills their profit.
Let’s fix that.
1. Stop Pricing Based on Emotion
Many new founders price low because they’re afraid.
Afraid no one will buy.
Afraid competitors are cheaper.
Afraid of being “too expensive.”
But cheap pricing doesn’t build sustainable brands. It builds stress.
Instead of asking, “Will people pay this?”
Ask: “Does this price cover my costs and pay me properly?”
If it doesn’t, you don’t have a pricing problem. You have a profitability problem.
2. Know Your Real Costs (Not Just Product Cost)
Your product cost is only one piece of the puzzle.
Your true cost includes:
Product manufacturing or sourcing
Shipping (to you and to customers)
Packaging
Payment processing fees
Ads
Website apps and subscriptions
Returns and damages
If your product costs $20 to source and you sell at $25, you are not making $5 profit. After fees and ads, you might be losing money without realizing it.
Clarity creates control.
3. Choose a Pricing Strategy (On Purpose)
There are three common approaches:
Cost-Plus Pricing
Add a markup (usually 2x–3x) on your total landed cost. Simple and safe for beginners.
Value-Based Pricing
Price based on the transformation your product delivers. If it solves a big problem, it can command a higher price.
Market-Position Pricing
Are you premium? Mid-range? Budget-friendly?
Your price must align with your brand story.
Confusing positioning leads to confused customers.
4. Protect Your Margins
Healthy ecommerce brands aim for:
60–70% gross margin for private label
30–50% for reselling models
Why? Because ads are expensive. Scaling costs money. Growth requires reinvestment.
If your margins are thin, scaling becomes stressful.
5. Test, Don’t Guess
Pricing is not permanent.
It’s a strategy.
Test price points.
Test bundles.
Test free shipping thresholds.
Small adjustments can significantly increase average order value and profit.

Traffic brings people.
Pricing determines whether you actually make money.
Before you run ads.
Before you scale.
Before you celebrate sales.
Make sure your numbers make sense.
